There are some vocalists who are just never going to give their best performances standing still in front of a pop shield. Maybe thats just me and I'm crazy. However, my own preference, and that of many producers in the genre, is to use the spot mics as the predominant sources for indvidual drums, but to reinforce or augment them by adding samples on top. The way it is voiced in the mids, it falls right into the mix with the least amount of post eq'ing, and 80% of the homework is done.
